How Weighted Grades Are Calculated

Most courses don't weight every assignment equally โ€” a final exam might be worth 40% of your grade while homework is worth 10%. To find your overall grade, multiply each category's score by its weight, add those products together, and divide by the total weight. For example, 90% on homework (weight 10), 80% on a midterm (weight 30), and 85% on a final (weight 40) gives (90ร—10 + 80ร—30 + 85ร—40) รท 80 = 84.25%.

What Grade Do You Need?

The same formula works in reverse to reveal the score you need on a remaining assignment to hit a target grade. Enter the scores you already have with their weights and solve for the missing piece. It's the fastest way to know, before an exam, exactly what you need to pass or to keep an A.

Grades vs GPA

A percentage grade measures one course; a GPA averages letter grades across several courses on a 4.0 scale. Calculate each course grade here first, convert it to a letter, then use the GPA tool to combine them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply each category score by its weight, sum the results, then divide by total weight. Example: 80%ร—30 + 90%ร—40 + 95%ร—30 = 89.5%.
A 90-92% is typically A- (3.7 GPA). A 93%+ is an A (4.0). Exact scales vary by institution.
Yes. The calculator computes a weighted average from entered weights. It works even if total is not 100%.
