The U.S. Navy Method
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, which estimates body fat percentage from a few tape-measure readings instead of expensive equipment. Men measure neck and waist; women measure neck, waist, and hips. Together with height, those numbers feed a formula that correlates well with more elaborate methods for most people — typically within about 3–4% of a clinical reading.
Reading Your Result
Body fat percentage is a more useful health signal than weight alone because it separates fat from muscle and bone. General reference ranges are:
| Category | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Essential fat | 2–5% | 10–13% |
| Athletes | 6–13% | 14–20% |
| Fitness | 14–17% | 21–24% |
| Average | 18–24% | 25–31% |
| Obese | 25%+ | 32%+ |
Accuracy and Limits
Because it relies on tape measurements, results vary with how carefully you measure — keep the tape level and snug but not tight, and measure at the same time of day. The method is an estimate, not a medical diagnosis; very muscular or very lean bodies fall outside its assumptions. For a complementary view, compare it with your BMI, which is easier to measure but cannot tell muscle from fat.
