Pace, Time and Distance

Running performance links three numbers: pace (minutes per mile or km), the distance, and the finish time. Fix any two and the third is determined: pace = time ÷ distance, time = pace × distance, distance = time ÷ pace. Run 5 km in 25 minutes and your pace is 5:00 per km. This calculator solves for whichever value you leave blank.

Race Time Predictions

Knowing your goal pace lets you plan a race. To break 2 hours in a half-marathon (21.1 km) you need to hold about 5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile. A pace band — your target split at each km or mile — helps you avoid starting too fast, the most common pacing error.

Frequently Asked Questions

A comfortable beginner pace is 8-10 minutes per kilometer. Maintain a conversational pace — if you cannot talk, slow down.
Multiply pace (min/km) by distance in km. A 5:30/km pace for a 10K = 55 minutes total.
Men 18-34 need sub-3:00 (about 4:16/km). Women 18-34 need sub-3:30 (about 4:59/km). Times vary by age group.
