Adding and Removing VAT

Value Added Tax is included in the displayed price across the EU and UK. To add VAT, multiply the net price by (1 + rate): €100 at 21% becomes €121. To find the net price from a VAT-inclusive total (removing VAT), divide: €121 ÷ 1.21 = €100. You cannot just subtract 21% from the gross figure, because the VAT was charged on the smaller net amount.

VAT Rates Vary by Country

Each country sets its own standard rate — for example 21% in Spain and the Netherlands, 20% in France and the UK, 19% in Germany — plus reduced rates for essentials like food and books. The calculator includes the standard EU rates so you can switch country quickly.

VAT vs Sales Tax

VAT is collected in stages along the supply chain and shown in the price; US-style sales tax is added once at the register. For US prices, use the sales tax calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax added at each stage of the supply chain. The end consumer bears the full cost. EU standard rates range from 17% (Luxembourg) to 27% (Hungary). Spain's standard rate is 21%.
To add VAT: multiply the net price by (1 + VAT rate). To remove VAT from a gross price: divide by (1 + VAT rate). Example: €100 + 21% VAT = €121 gross; €121 gross ÷ 1.21 = €100 net.
VAT-exclusive (ex-VAT) prices show the base amount before tax. VAT-inclusive (inc-VAT) prices include the tax. B2B transactions often show ex-VAT; B2C prices must show inc-VAT in the EU.
