What Is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used by designers, developers, and publishers to fill space while the real content is being prepared. It looks like Latin but is actually scrambled text derived from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a 45 BC philosophical work by Cicero.

The most common version starts with: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…" This text has been the industry standard dummy text since the 1500s when an unknown printer scrambled it to make a type specimen book.

Why Use Lorem Ipsum?

Designers use placeholder text instead of real copy for two reasons. First, it avoids distraction — when people read meaningful text, they focus on what it says rather than how it looks. Second, it fills layouts realistically because lorem ipsum has a natural distribution of letters, word lengths, and punctuation that closely mirrors real prose, giving a more accurate sense of how the final design will feel.

Using random repeated text like "aaaa aaaa aaaa" doesn't work because it creates unnatural visual patterns that distort the design evaluation.

Sentences are useful when you need a specific amount of text for a single block like a card description or button label. Words give you fine-grained control — useful for headlines, labels, or testing character limits.
